Robert Frost Understood How an Artist Views the World.

10/26/2009

What inspires an artist? As a kid sitting in the backseat of my parent's car I remember looking at the scenery go by and every once in awhile noticing something really interesting - a tree with arms like a man, a tractor in a ditch, birds on a wire, an oversized sign. Nothing worth stopping for but scenes leaving an impression all the way home. I still notice the small stuff and don't always stop to take a picture but some of it still manages to find its way into my paintings. The rest become entertaining glimpses that serve to pass the time and inspire a creative mind.

A Passing Glimpse by Robert Frost

I often see flowers from a passing car
That are gone before I can tell what they are.

I want to get out of the train and go back
To see what they were beside the track.

I name all the flowers I am sure they weren't;
Not fireweed loving where woods have burnt--

Not bluebells gracing a tunnel mouth--
Not lupine living on sand and drouth.

Was something brushed across my mind
That no one on earth will ever find?

Heaven gives its glimpses only to those
Not in position to look too close.
